Associate Actuary

Job Summary:
The Associate Actuary is responsible for the development, maintenance and execution of all actuarial valuation models and rate setting models including the development of assumptions for those models. This position also provides actuarial analysis and reports relating to valuation, benefit liabilities and financial impacts.

Job Duties:
Develops, maintains and executes actuarial models for year end and month end valuations.

Prepares actuarial impact analyses of changes or potential changes in legislation, policy or administrative practices, and accounting or actuarial standards, as they relate to the benefit liability.

Prepares various reports in support of the annual rate setting process as well as assisting the Chief Actuary in the preparation of other reports including the annual valuation report.

Prepares gain and loss analyses for use in the annual actuarial valuation report.

Conducts studies of assumptions and methods used in valuation of liabilities and recommends changes as appropriate.

Reviews the valuation and rate setting work performed by members of the Actuarial Department to ensure compliance with all applicable processes, actuarial standards and legislation.

Monitors and analyzes economic developments and economic variables for use in actuarial work.

Monitors developments in actuarial techniques and practices and recommends changes where appropriate.

Prepares disclosure material for use in financial statements.

Maintains documentation of actuarial work.

Maintains knowledge of relevant legislation, WCB policies and practices, and actuarial and accounting standards.

Maintains active membership in relevant professional organizations; pursues professional and personal development through continuing education, training and literature reviews.

Participates in interdepartmental projects and committees as necessary.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Four (4) year university degree with a major in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or other related discipline

Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (ACIA)

Completion of any combination of three (3) Society of Actuaries (SOA) fellowship level exams or modules in a single track and working towards a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) designation

Minimum of five (5) years of actuarial experience

Advanced proficiency in the use of a personal computer and software (database, spreadsheet and word processing applications) in a Windows environment

Knowledge of SQL, SPSS, Excel and Access

Well developed analytical and problem solving skills

Ability to manipulate, modify, extract and analyze database information

Ability to take initiative and think creatively to develop and support recommendations

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing including the ability to translate complex information into plain language

Ability to organize and prioritize workload

Ability to work independently and in a team environment
